ESPN’s “SportsCentury” Brings Kappa Studios into The Game with Motion Control
Burbank, April 15, 2003: Kappa Studios, Inc. announces its role in the production of ESPN’s Emmy-winning SportsCentury. Phred Tinampay, Kappa’s own motion control artist, successfully brings the stills to life for the dramatic sports show. According to Tinampay, SportsCentury has a very specific “look” that previously had only been achieved by ESPN Productions. For Kappa’s first shoot of SportsCentury stills, ESPN producer Dan Bowen flew in from Bristol, Connecticut to assure that the look and feel of the show would be maintained. Kappa was in sync with him from the very beginning. Tinampay combines 56k lighting with various soft filters for the specific film-like look, enhancing ESPN’s standard for shadows, lighting, and composition in each shot. “Motion control is a very specific field of videography,” Tinampay says. “If the producer has two-dimensional photos that correspond with the story, motion control shots can stand in for video that is inaccessible, too expensive, or doesn’t exist.” Props, dynamic lighting, angles, and the precision of a robotic camera all add to the drama of the sports moments SportsCentury illustrates. Paul Long, president of Kappa Studios, says, “Phred is an artist first. A producer doing motion control at Kappa has the advantage of an operator with high standards of quality and attention to detail, a commitment to the project, and a willingness to augment the creative process without challenging the producer’s requirements. He is also one of very few people who have more than 8 years of motion control experience, which means we are shooting closer and faster than just about anyone.”
Kappa’s numerous other post-production services are another convenient asset to the producer who has more to do than just motion control. Complete turn-key post treatment includes uncompressed linear tape online, Avid offline, Avid Symphony Online, main title design, digital compositing/grfx department, motion control camera, Protools sound mixing, a Dolby dub stage, voice overs, onsite composer, 100% Q.C., DVD menu design, full sound restoration services, tape transfers, and duplication.
