“Your Chance to Dance”, a new CMT series premiering Friday, July 23rd is being posted by Kappa Studios in Burbank. Each one hour episode, hosted by TV personality Mark W. Walberg, features five contestants putting their unique spin on popular video dance moves before a live studio audience, who then vote to determine who will win the $10,000 prize. Taped in Los Angeles, “Your Chance to Dance” features contestants competing as singles, couples and groups – each hoping to dance away with the prize money.

The show is produced by the Gurin Company. President and Executive Producer Phil Gurin said, “Your Chance to Dance” is ultimately a celebration of those memorable pop culture dances that we all love. We are pleased to partner with CMT again on a high-energy, family friendly, music-filled competition show.”

The Gurin Company is a long time Kappa client having recently completed two seasons of CMT’s #1 hit show “Singing Bee” at the facility.

Kappa Studios, Inc. has just completed picture and sound finishing on the docu-series Double Exposure airing on Bravo. The show follows renowned art and fashion photographers Markus Klinko and former model Indrani (ex-wife of Markus), along with high-end stylist GK Reid. The show gives viewers a taste of the fast-paced world of high fashion and celebrity photography with a sometimes tense undercurrent of conflict and artistic differences.

Markus and Indrani have shot virtually every contemporary boldface name and countless other iconic images for fashion campaigns and magazines. With two former lovers working together 18 hours a day in incredibly high-stress environments, filled with deadlines, stretched budgets, expensive locations and demanding talent, it’s not unusual for sparks to fly both on camera and outside the frame. Double Exposure is produced by Juma Entertainment with Bob Horowitz and Lewis Fenton serving as executive producers. Jason Bryan is Line Producer.

Kappa was able to keep this complex show on schedule and on budget through its ability to use multiple HD edit bays and double shifts when needed. Kappa’s president Paul Long has this to say: “Because of today’s production environment, we have become experts at perfecting post production logistics that save time and money for everyone. Double Exposure airs on Bravo this summer.

One of the first facilities to embrace the revolutionary RED One Camera, Kappa studios has attracted a string of projects using this cutting edge technology and provides large facility resources to independent producers.

The latest theatrical feature posted by Kappa is Unrequited which tells the story of Ben Jacobs, a troubled young man who, on his 18th birthday, must leave the group home where he has been living for the past several months. After moving back in with his mother, Ben discovers that his girlfriend is now dating an older college guy. Desperate for love and unable to cope with losing Jessica, Ben’s troubled past catches up with him as he kidnaps her in an attempt to regain her affection. Events do not improve.

The film is being distributed worldwide by Arclight and was produced by Jeff Day and Tom Lockridge of Lucky Day Studios. The company is unusual in that it not only wants to make successful films but it also encourages college and university students to serve as interns and apprentices working side-by-side with industry professionals. Jason Epperson, from On The Lot, a joint venture created by Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett, directed the picture.

Kappa’s Digital Intermediate Supervisor Igor Ridanovic used the Avid DS to assemble and color correct the picture. Ridanovic has this to say: “The combination of the DS and our Samsung projector provides a powerful team of color grading tools. This is a theatrical feature, so seeing it in a theater like environment is extremely helpful.” Kappa’s lead mixer Humberto Zamores supervised the audio editing and mixed the 5.1 audio in its Dolby certified dub stage.

Kappa Studios, Inc. is a full service High-Def post production facility located in the media district of Burbank, California. Kappa Studios partners with its clients to provide complete picture and sound packages for television and digital cinema. Their services include a Dolby-certified dubstage, digital file management, closed caption transcription and encoding, and a CGI graphics department. Kappa is host and co-founder of RED User Group LA and RED Boot Camp. A complete description of services, credit lists, as well as photos of the environment, are available at www.kappastudios.com.

Kappa Studios is completing Digital Intermediate and Dolby 5.1 surround mix for a theatrical feature shot on the revolutionary new RED One digital camera. “Heist” is the first RED originated feature film completely posted on Avid.

In addition to Avid’s RED workflow, Kappa’s DI Supervisor Igor Ridanovic has developed a proprietary software tool for RED post production. Kappa is also a beta tester for Monkey Extract software application. Digital Intermediate Colorist Eric Babinec is using the latest Avid DS v10 for color grading.
“Heist” film Editor Drake Silliman, ACE made a decision to edit in Avid Media Composer due to his years of experience cutting with Avid products. The technical staff at Kappa Studios made the transition to working with RED media on Avid completely transparent. Silliman says, “Using RED files in Avid was flawless and as fast as any project I’ve edited.”

In this suspense thriller filmed in Atlanta and Los Angeles a troubled man convinces his estranged brother to rob an armored truck in broad daylight on a busy Los Angeles street corner. This is the first of several bad ideas that drive the plot.

Leading man Rick Jordan shared directorial duties with Richard Cooper on the Wayne Wong produced picture for EBS World Entertainment.

The idea to shoot RED came from DP Grisha Alasadi who had already shot several projects with RED One and suggested using it for “Heist”. The benefit to cost ratio, plus the ability to record a 4K image with film like imagery quickly persuaded all involved that RED was the right choice.

The producer, Creative Differences, is one of the top producers for Discovery and has produced more shows with more networks than any other American based production company. Kappa provided offline Avid editing suites, audio recording and mix, HD picture assembly and color correction.

“Tornadoes” analyzes the most destructive tornadoes ever caught on tape. A mixture of 3D animation, HD interviews, and home video the show features eyewitness accounts from those who survived the storms and the footage they risked their lives to capture. “Swarms and Stampedes” features masses of animals and insects and some of the most incredible video ever shot. “Landslides” depicts one of nature’s most terrifying disasters, responsible for thousands of deaths around the world each year. Some of the most unforgettable landslides ever caught on tape are analyzed by scientists and their stories told by survivors.

Burbank, CA At this month’s RED User Group LA meeting held at Kappa Studios Ted Schilowitz (“Leader of the Rebellion”) was on hand to show some of the new features of the RED One Build 16 firmware. One the new features demonstrated by Schilowitz on the Kappa dub stage was the addition of REDspace and RAW viewing modes. This allows for much more accurate exposure setting and helps ensure that no information is lost in the brighter portions of the scene.

When in REDspace the cinematographer uses a histogram of the scenes brightness to obtain an overall exposure that will maximize the detail in the bright and dark areas of the scene.

Other highlights of Build 16 include Digital Signal Processing and Image Compression Optimization; support for 4K 16:9 recordings in REDALERT and QuickTime based applications; in-camera 1080p playback of REDCODE RAW .R3D files; improved audio sample to video frame synchronization (lip sync accuracy); updated file name structure to eliminate duplicate file names; improved display precision and color response of RED-EVF and RED-LCD; the addition of Pre-Record (10 sec or 30 sec loop) mode; and Look Around available on HD PREVIEW outputs when LCD and EVF are active.

After the Final Cut Pro conform the video was colored, finished and versioned in one of Kappa’s Avid DS Nitris suites.

“We did architectural signage removal and additional dirt fixes. The process was simple and straightforward,” says Kappa’s DS Artist Igor Ridanovic. The final video was aspect ratio corrected for 1.85.

“Rise” was produced by Sarah Mac Murray, directed by Gavin Bowden and edited by Jesse Atlas.

Burbank, CA July 1, 2008: The digitally acquired theatrical feature film South Dakota, produced and directed by Bruce Isacson, will have final picture assembly and a 5.1 Dolby Surround audio track completed at Kappa Studios.

The picture is unique in that it combines documentary and dramatic footage in the same production. Editor Corky Ehlers (Lonesome Dove, Gettysburg, Gods and Generals) says, “Intercutting back and forth between the two genres strongly accentuates the impact of the other and creates a more compelling story.”

The dramatic material was shot using the Sony F23 camera which combines 4:4:4 RGB recording with film camera style features not available on most HD cameras: variable frame rates, variable recording, instant playback of over-cranked under-cranked material, all recorded on the industry standard SR tape format. On South Dakota two F23 cameras were used in tandem for ease of coverage and shooting efficiency. The documentary footage was shot on the Sony XDCam HD format to provide an ENG look.

Kappa president Paul Long has a high regard for the F23 and describes it as “a really great advance in digital cinema. The camera provides superb color imagery with a very wide latitude and tremendous detail in the shadow areas.”

Burbank, CA June 18, 2008: The RED Los Angeles User Group formed earlier this year with monthly meetings at Kappa Studios has rapidly become Hollywood’s prime venue for sharing information on the revolutionary new cameras from RED Digital Cinema. The first camera in the series, the RED One, has attracted the attention of renowned directors Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and Steven Soderbergh (the Ocean’s series, Michael Clayton, the Argentine). Both directors have used the camera on recent productions.

RED technology presents new opportunities to filmakers regardless of the budget they have to work with. As Steven Soderbergh puts it, “This is the camera I’ve been waiting for my whole career: jaw-dropping imagery recorded onboard a camera light enough to hold with one hand. I don’t know how Jim (Jannard) and the Red team did it—and they won’t tell me—but I know this: Red is going to change everything.”

Peter Jackson is equally enthusiastic: “It’s pretty exciting, and will have a major impact on indie filming – but we could see no reason why you couldn’t use these cameras for any type of movie. I’m seriously considering using RED for The Lovely Bones.”

The RED Los Angeles User Group whose monthly meetings attract a packed house at Kappa Studios, the Burbank post facility specializing in completion of RED projects, was featured in a special report in the June issue of Post Magazine. At that meeting Ted Schilowitz, RED’s “leader of the revolution,” told attendees about the latest developments at RED Digital Cinema. Each month members get up-to-the-minute information on accessories, techniques and technology. So great is the demand for information on RED, Kappa is offering a series of day-long RED Boot Camp sessions covering acquisition through final output.

Watts, CA May 7, 2008: Kappa Studios Burbank, EFILM and Deluxe Labs have agreed to partner with Pinlight LLC on the completion to 35mm film of The Wordz Project movie trailer. A project that has been seen as very marketable with a positive message to the hip hop community, The Wordz Project, producers Lee Cantelon and Richard Shaw are pleased to have these studios involved.

Richard Shaw, owner of Pinlight in Hollywood says, “Kappa Studio’s involvement with the incredible Red One Camera and Avid Nitris editing system has been vital to us. This enabled us to obtain the assistance of EFILM and DELUXE for the filmout recording of the high-resolution footage to 35mm with Dolby 5.1 surround audio. It’s a tremendous break for our project.” Lee Cantelon, the editor of The Wordz book (Scriptural words of Christ) on which the project is based commented, “What is happening is a merging of positive content along with technically advanced post production techniques from some of the most respected companies in Hollywood.” Pinlight is currently planning a one-hour TV special.

The Wordz has been a long-term music project with many major recording artists including: the Bone Thugs -n- Harmony and The Last Poets, Blaxmyth, (came in 2nd in competition with 7,600 other bands), Yo Yo, SKIM, Pat’s Justice, Mr. Mixx (2Live Crew) Pangy, Oblivion, and many others. The Wordz trailer now in post production includes high resolution RED One footage from the street in Watts and interviews with Lil’ Drawz, DreGhost, and Bigg Slice, (rapper and car customizer for Snoop).
